Changi Airport in Singapore has been voted the ‘World’s Best Airport’ for the fourth time earlier this year. The prestigious award was given by Skytrax who carries out the largest international airport satisfaction survey of air travellers annually. Changi Airport not only managed to come out on top of the annual World Airport Awards but with more than 500 awards under its belt, it is the most awarded airport in the world! This all fuelled my excitement when we planned a stopover at Changi Airport on our way to Bali.
The amount of things to see and do at Changi Airport was absolutely incredible and almost endless. It is certainly one of the greatest airports for travellers that have a stopover that lasts for more than 2 hours. Best of all is that most things on offer are completely free! Here is my list of what I believe are the 15 top things to see and do at Changi Airport:
1. Admire the stunning butterflies at the Butterfly Garden
Changi Airport is the first airport in the world featuring a butterfly garden, home to about 1,000 stunning butterflies from 40 species. The butterflies fly freely in the enclosed tropical garden that stretches over two storeys, beautifully landscaped with plants and flowers and a small waterfall.
2. Lounge at the Roof Top Pool
We did not have enough time to lounge at the roof top pool (I just went up for a quick look and a photo) but it is certainly a fun idea for travellers that have some time on their hands. It seems to be the only attraction that is not free of charge.
3. Get mesmerised by the movements of the Kinetic Rain sculpture
It is rather hypnotising to watch the copper coated droplets of the kinetic rain sculpture move graciously into various different shapes and positions. The sculpture weights unbelievable 24 tonnes in total!
4. Take advantage of a free Guided Singapore Tour
Travellers that have a stopover of more than 5 hours can take advantage of the airports free city tours. Both tours, the ‘city sights tour’ as well as the ‘heritage tour’, have a 20 minute stopover at the famous Merlion Park with Singapore’s national icon, the Merlion, a statue which has the body of a fish and the head of a lion.
5. Watch a Free Movie at one of the two 24/7 cinema’s
The two cinemas at Changi airport have decent sized screens and comfortable chairs from which travellers can enjoy blockbuster movies 24/7!
6. Keep yourself occupied at the Entertainment Deck
Game lovers can keep themselves occupied at the entertainment deck with xbox 360s, play stations and an xbox kinetic room.
7. Follow the latest sport events at Experience
The latest sport events are screened at Experience all day long so that sports enthusiasts won’t miss out on the latest events in the sports world.
8. Have a nap at the Snooze Lounge
A lounge dedicated to snoozing with comfortable lounge chairs is the ideal place to have a power nap between flights.
9. Upload your selfies at the Social Tree
The social tree allows travellers to upload and instantly showcase their photos and videos that they take at one of the 8 touch screen photo booths surrounding the tree.
10. Visit the Sunflower Garden for a little happiness
After spending a few hours travelling nothing can cheer you up like the sight of 500 bright yellow sunflowers that have been planted at the outdoor sunflower garden.
11. Whizz down the world’s largest airport Slide
The slide is a staggering 12 metres high and let you reach up to 6 metres per second. Rides can be redeemed from purchases at the airport.
12. For a little magic, visit the Enchanted Garden
More than 50 species of ferns and flowers can be seen at the enchanted garden which also features a koi pond and four large glass bouquets.
13. Stroll through one of the many fabulous little gardens like the Water Lily Garden, Cactus Garden, Piazza Garden, Sculptural Tree Garden and the Orchid garden
The butterfly and sunflower garden that I have already mentioned are not the only gardens that are worth a visit at the airport. Changi airport has done a fantastic job in integrating green spaces throughout the airport.
14. Enjoy a relaxing Foot Massage
There are many massage chairs scattered throughout the airport that treat tired feet to a relaxing foot massage.
15. Let your kids run wild at one of the Indoor Playground’s
Travellers with children aged 1-12 years old will appreciate the indoor playgrounds. The airport also offers seasonal activities for kids especially during school holidays.
With all these great things the only challenge is not to forget to hop on to the next flight 🙂
