Mikla with its breathtaking 360º degree vistas of Istanbul, atop the Marmara Pera Hotel, is the place to be on a hot summers evening and as far as rooftop bars go it’s hard to beat! Cool bartenders create the most delicious cocktails while a dedicated DJ plays summery feel-good tunes in the background. This top-notch bar certainly sets the mood for a great night out before or after you had an outstanding meal in their restaurant one floor below.
The first thing that grabs your attention when you walk on to the rooftop bar are the dazzling views of the city below as well as the sleek and modern design. Bar stools are cleverly placed along the edges for the most magical views that stretch all the way to the old town with its historical buildings.

We enjoyed a few delicious cocktails (Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic and a Bellini – if you are asking!) in the evening sun just before the place filled up with people – it is a very popular place amongst locals!
It would have been easy to spend a lot more time at this urban, sleek and stylish rooftop bar with its comfy loungers, dramatic setting and small roof top pool which was located in one of the corners of the bar.
However, the elegant and stylish restaurant below was as impressive as the rooftop bar – tastefully decorated with yet again stunning views over Istanbul. Celebrated chef Mehmet Gars, regular on Turkish television and book author, created a sophisticated menu with locally sourced ingredients. The dishes reflect the Turkish-Scandinavian background of the chef which makes for interesting taste combinations! Mikla is also the only Turkish restaurant that is featured on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
We were seated just before sunset at one of the tables with the best views.
Each dish was beautifully presented and just delicious! This is cherry tomato with cheese and crisp flat breads – a wonderful start to a great meal!
As an amuse bouche we were both served a fresh and light cress puree with fish and cucumber.
We also very much enjoyed Mikla’s Signature dish – Balik Emek – Crispy Sardine, Buttered Bread, Lemon.
My husband next opted for the Red Mullet – Buckwheat, Salicornia, Fennel, Cress, Apple Vinegar.
Whereas I opted for the Octopus – North Aegean Octopus, Sakiz Artichoke, Lemon Blossom, Camel Suck, Sour Cherry Vinegar. Which was not only a delight to eat but a little works of art – I love food that is beautifully presented!
Meanwhile the sun had set over Istanbul giving way to a spectacular nighttime panorama!
While admiring the sparkling lights of Istanbul we were served another one of Mikla’s signature dishes – Manti – Vegetable or Lamb Shank Manti, Smoked Buffalo Yoghurt, Tomato, Roasted Garlic, Sumac. Taking pictures at dark never does dishes justice but let me just tell you – this dish was absolutely amazing! We had both the vegetarian as well as the meat version, both were simply mouthwatering and I would not be able to pick a favourite!
Next I had the Grilled Lamb – Beef Leaf, Firik, Liver, Manti, Mushroom, Mulberries Molasses, Zahter which was pure perfection.
My husband had the Braised Lamb – Cibes, ‘Birdshot’ Pistachio, Apricot, Salted Yoghurt, Cumin Crumbs, beautifully tender and wonderful in combination with the Cumin and Yoghurt.
My choice for dessert was Sütlaç – Rice Pudding With Mastic, Roasted Hazelnut, Black Mulberry Crisp, Plum Sorbet. Since childhood rice pudding represents a plate of happiness to me 🙂 It was perfectly prepared with a nice, creamy consistency, sweet but not too sweet!
To finish a very pleasant meal we were given a few sweets at the end.
One last view from the restaurant terrace before we headed back to our hotel.
